SYNOPSIS:

Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The ex Indian Captain has now

come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper

and less in reality.
The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten

what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because

you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey

stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. They have played every game but hockey to

make sure they get selected every year in the Indian National team. But what does it really mean to play for the

Indian National team? To play for India?

The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their

country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get

there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows

there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be

possible.
Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed

we can.
Chak De India is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their

diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about

honesty, sincerity and integrity. A story to remind the nation of its National sport.

Chak De! India - Some Thoughts

I know I am pretty late in catching up with this film, but I finally watched Chak De! India A lot have been written about it on passionforcinema and elsewhere, but still I would add my two bits here, particularly as I think it’s rare to get a film coming from the mainstream framework to have so much layering that is done commendably well. So here goes my take, point by point:

1. Though SRK has said in an interview that he acted just exactly as he does in any other movie, I think Swades and Chak De are the only two films where he chose to go into the character, rising above the Rahul/Raj image. Particularly in the scene towards the end of the movie when it slowly sinks into Kabir Khan that his girls have done it and the ghost chasing him all the years has been exorcised, SRK is great. That’s the Shah Rukh Khan we would love to see more – the actor who is a star, not the star who is an actor.

2. The real star of the movie is neither SRK nor the 16 girls. It is Jaideep Sahni, who wrote the brilliant script that to a great extent played to the gallery yet made a number of telling observations. So, for those who just want to watch a film for its entertainment value, it has got all the elements of the drama and emotion, and for those who want to go beyond there is much more.

3. A Muslim who is accused of being traitor is not a new thing in Indian cinema in recent years, but CDI does it with great sensitivity without the lecturing that quite a films have fallen victim to (an exception was the character played by Mukesh Rishi in Sarfarosh).

4. Each player in the hockey team actually reflects Sahni’s own concerns regarding how particularly in northern India – in places like Delhi where I live – communities from other parts of India have to face a lot of prejudices every day of their lives (Sahni explained this to me during a recent interview / conversation). So, if the girl from Andhra Pradesh is told that for a Delhiite, Tamil and Telugu are the same (to which she retorts that they are as same as a Punjabi is to a Bihari), the girls from the North-East are welcomed as guests, to which the Manipuri girl retorts ‘how can one be happy at being treated as ‘mehmaan’ in one’s own country?’ These and other examples of prejudices and general ignorance amongst us about our own country is one aspect that is brought home without any sermonizing, which makes it great.

5. CDI, like any other sports movie, is all about underdogs going on to win against all odds against far superior rivals (examples – Lagaan, Hip Hip Hurray, Jo Jita Wohi Sikandar, Chariots of Fire, Million Dollar Baby…..). But rising above the basic theme, the script also filters in the issue of women’s status in the Indian society – whether in the middle class or the upper class.

6. The cricket versus other sports debate was, of course, the obvious one, and we get to see stories on this every other day in the media, particularly when there is a story of a sportsperson fallen into bad times. Women’s hockey is even worse when it comes to facilities. This is telling told in the film, thanks to Sahni’s script.

7. The politics within sports teams and the non-sporting games played by sports association bosses who have nothing to do with sports was another aspect dealt with quite beautifully, again without sermonizing. KPS Gill, the Indian Hockey Federation chief, should be compulsorily made to watch this film with his cronies in IHF.

8. The finale was definitely fairytale ending keeping in mind commercial considerations. In a film like this, obviously it cannot end on a sad note after defining all the odds each character is placed against, including Kabir Khan who sees in this the only opportunity to exorcise the label of traitor.

9. There will be many more aspects that would come out with a finer reading of the film – and this is just one done in a hurry – but the one of the most important aspect about CDI is that Yash Raj Films came forward to produce it despite it not having chiffon-clad heroines, songs shot in the Swiss Alps and a clash of families. After producing films like Kabul Express and distributing Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, CDI is a clear sign that traditional filmmaking houses like YRF are changing, or maybe being forced to change by an audience which is changing. If that is happening, it can only mean good things for Hindi cinema. Keeping my fingers crossed!

10. And yes – the day I watched the film, was the day when Jhulan Goswami of India was announced as the Women Cricketer of the Year by the ICC. No male cricketer from India got anywhere near the awards.

This weekend I checked out two films of differing styles and character. In a way, it was a journey from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Even if I discount the immediate post-viewing mass hysteria, Chak De India is not just a film.

It’s a revolution of sorts, hitting at the centuries of obscurantism in traditional Indian society that viewed women, for obvious pecuniary and sexual reasons, as second class beings, existing only to satisfy the whims of the superior and powerful patriarchal class.

So, when SRK, subdued, unshaven, sober and refreshingly restrained, gets down to create a World Cup winning women’s Hockey team, he puts a minor but significant foot in the door for women to assert themselves as individuals.

Though it begins as a private battle to redeem himself and regain his lost pride, it ends up breaking a mould, and what a rotten mould it was!

In this, lies the true triumph of the film, besides the obvious winners in terms of a taut script, invigorating cast of actors and a never before seen SRK minus his customary stutter, cultivated drawl and over-the-hill flamboyance.

The film tugs at your heart and makes you want to do something for this much maligned, much abused country, desperately short of heroes and good tidings.

In a subliminal way, Chak De India is very much the story of the underdog that too deserves her moment in the Sun.

On the other hand, RGV Ki Aag is a self-indulgent fantasy unfolding without any logic.

Looks like the film was made when RGV was in a prolonged state of daze and most definitely had ear plugs on. For the soundtrack is so loud and pompous, it is designed to wake up even the dead.

RGV has managed to accomplish an almost impossible feat of making Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgan look trite and wastrels as actors, not a minor achievement by any score.

Urmila’s pelvic-in-your-face movements notwithstanding, the film does everything in its power to make your spirits droop to a new low. You begin to get angry at the sheer stupidity of it all.

Was this Sholay revisited? Bull! Even if you don’t compare it to the original classic, it’s a waste of a film. Things happen because a crazy self-obsessed director willed them to be, with absolute disregard to the intelligence of his audience.

The script is almost non-existent, and whatever little is, is banal, pedestrian and overly pretentious in trying to evoke gutter-like and guttural quality from its lead protagonists.

The film is shot with dark overtones and darker undertones, in the belief that it’s the new mantra of gangster flicks, and each character is like a caricature of his or her self, bereft of dignity and conviction, choking on an unreal brooding intensity that seems so whacked out. If it was meant to be a spoof, it falls flat on its glitzy egg-splashed face.

What the hell was RGV thinking? That he would crap a truckload of stars and the audience will lap it up? Loud, pretentious, contrived, it’s shit served on a silver platter with a generous dash of stale perfume, which simply doesn’t work.

The audience has moved on; RGV needs to move to a rehab.

Check out Chak De India, it will restore your faith in good cinema, and hopefully, in India. And check out RGV Ki Aag only if you lack self-esteem and want to feel sorry for yourself.

Yeh kabhi knicker wicker pahan ke hockey ke maidan par utar sakti hai kya?”The ‘sports administrator’, who spoke these infamous words on screen, had to eat his words in the end when the ‘Chak De’ girls came home triumphant with the hockey world cup. The movie, it seems, didn’t just end up with the usual feel good factor and a tax-free tag.

The SRK reel effect in ‘Chak De’ seems to have rubbed off on the real as more and more girls seem to be taking up active sports.

Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chak De India’ has got the goody girls hooked on to sports. “It’s a revolution,” says Anjali Shah of Premier Indian Football Academy (PIFA), adding, “The number of inquiries and enrolment of girls in the game has gone up by 50 per cent this year.

In fact for the very first time, women above 20 years also want to learn the game and play for the country.” PIFA is all set to form a woman’s football team after four women insisted on learning the game and forming a woman’s team.

PIFAis on the lookout for 15 women to complete their women’s football team. And as far as hockey is concerned, the sport has suddenly received a huge momentum.

Ignatius D’Souza, sub coach of the Bombay Hockey Women’s Association informs that four Mumbai schools namely St Paul Convent High School at Dadar, Pawar Public School in Bhandup, Canossa Convent in Andheri and St Teresa’s Convent in Santacruz have introduced hockey in their sports curriculum.

Even colleges are fast catching up with the game. Nisha Nair, the girl who plays Soi Moi in ‘Chak De India’ is an ace hockey player in real life as well.

She along with Ranjan Negi, the one who taught Chak De girls to play hockey, encouraged the Poddar College girls to form their own team. Nisha says, “I felt great when Poddar College actually formed a girls’ hockey team. Things are changing. Everybody around me seem to have suddenly grown fond of sports. It feels great.”

Chak De! India

'Chak De! India' scores one more goal. The Shah Rukh Khan starrer will now be part of a business school curriculum. The Aryans Business School (ABS), about 20 km from Chandigarh, has decided to make 'Chak De! India', a part of its MBA curriculum, to teach aspiring management students business skills.

Last year, some business schools took director Madhur Bhandarkar's film 'Corporate' as a case study.

Released last month, 'Chak De! India' received a tax exemption last week and is doing well both in India and abroad.

Ladies and gentlemen, the wait is over!!! Music of King Khan's latest movie, Chak De India, is here! In this film Shahrukh Khan plays the role of the coach of national hockey team, who takes his team in to World Cup. It is directed by Shmit Amin. Vidya Malvade also plays a major role in film, I think that of a hockey player who dreams of playing for the National Team. Just a guess. Chak De India is one of the major movies of the year under the Yash Raj Movies banner, and it's produced by the Chopras. BTW, this is SRK's first muslim role and accroding to IMDB.com, he grew the beard in order to look more muslim-like.

The music directors of Chak De are Salim and Sulaiman Merchant. I personally like the songs from this film, except the parts sung by SRK himself ;) They have done a good job. I hope you like it too.

The making-of-a-team sports movie is a timeworn genre, and yet “Chak De! India” (“Go, India!”) finds new variations. Though the game here is field hockey, those fondly recalling the United States soccer team’s first-place finish in the 1991 Women’s World Cup will find a lot to like.

Of course, there are conventions. Kabir Khan (the assured Bollywood veteran Shahrukh Khan) is a former player for India’s national field hockey team who missed a fateful play against Pakistan, costing a championship and making him a pariah. Seven years later, he is hired to coach the nation’s women’s hockey team, giving him one more shot at a title.

The players, from states all over India, are a fractious lot, including a tomboy (Chitrashi Rawat) whose father fears she will never marry; a forward (Sagarika Ghatge) whose boyfriend, a cricket superstar, wants her to quit the team and live in his shadow; a newlywed goalie (Vidya Malavade) whose in-laws expect her to stay at home; and a haughty, seasoned player (Shilpa Shukla) who needles the coach.

When leering boys at a McDonald’s harass them, a girls-against-boys melee erupts, but the coach doesn’t interfere, knowing the team will prevail — and find its spirit. From there, it’s on to the women’s hockey championships in Melbourne, Australia.

The director, Shimit Amin, strikes a buoyant, propulsive tone, replacing the customary Bollywood production numbers with exhilarating musical montages of team practice. For his part, Mr. Khan, to his credit, lets his co-stars’ youthful charisma carry the movie. He also laudably portrays a man who vigorously and unabashedly advocates the advancement of women.

In fact, the film’s greatest merit is its commentary on sexism in India. As it should, “Chak De! India” gives the women, in the closing credits, the last word.

The actor reveals candidly, “I generally do films which are bound to be successful. But, once a year, I do one film for my own personal satisfaction as an actor. ‘Chak De’ was one such film and I am glad that it has worked.”

However, it’s not the flops that upset him. “It makes me very unhappy when people say I cannot act. Without wanting to sound pompous, if I have survived in this industry for 19 years, I must know something. I definitely can’t be a fluke,” he says.

Ask him who his favorite director is and he gets diplomatic, “I have worked with most established as well as new directors. I find everyone unique in some way of the other. I have enjoyed working with 90 percent of them. I am someone who is a complete slave to the director. However, I need to enjoy what I am doing. I love the process of film making,” he says.

We are not handling fame, fame is handling us’We met the nine girls at a city multiplex.

Nisha: I was elated to be chosen for the movie. Whoever wouldn’t be? But I could never imagine that the film will be such a huge success. The adulations, the fame — it’s come all of a sudden and at first I did not know how to handle this, but I am now going with the flow, taking one step at a time. What about you Sandia?

Sandia : I am living every moment of it. I am getting loads of attention and I am really appreciating it. See, it all depends on you. You could get irritated or you could just learn to live with it. But, to tell you the truth, I do not want a lot of fame… that could be a curse. What do you think Chonchon?

Chonchon : You know, how in the movie Kabir Khan tells the girls to play their best game within the stipulated 70 minutes and how their lives will change after that. Kabir Khan was right. The movie has changed everything. It’s like a dream. It’s been a lot of hard work, but it was worth it.

Chitrashi : I am enjoying myself. If success has come to me, why wouldn’t I make the most it? Even on the sets I used to get pampered by SRK. You girls used to tease me na ki main kaisi unki godi mein baith jaati thi. Haha! I had never thought of taking up acting, but now I am thinking. But, at the moment I am soaking in the experience of being loved so much.

Vidya : It was an honour for me to lead you girls. I have been a part of this glam world for long… I have been a model, done ads and films too. I think you girls are lucky. You have tasted success from the word go, but I know what it feels like to have success elude you. But Chak De! India has given me a different high. It’s so wonderful to be your Didi — onscreen and offscreen.

Shilpa : I am living it up. Wherever we are going people are coming up to me and saying how much they loved the movie and how we girls were so good. Yes, we are celebrating girl power. In fact, people have been telling me how jealous they are of me for having acted with SRK and for that scene where I try to seduce him. Imagine people being jealous of me! I hope to have many more ‘fame’ous moments.

Tanya : Now, that the movie has become a hit and people are recognising me, I am hoping to get a boyfriend. Boys are too scared of me. Mereko gussa itni jaldi aata hain na! And on top of that I am a judo player. I am hoping things will change now. Haha! But to tell you the truth I am enjoying myself. People are asking me to take up acting full time. Let’s see what kind of offer I get. But I plan to complete my studies first.

Arya : You know life is ironical. I was always scared of being mobbed and remember how in Australia people had surrounded me? I cried for help and look at us now. Well, to tell the truth, I am not handling fame well. But I am getting there. I am learning to be diplomatic and not being the spitfire that I usually am. SRK is a dream I admired him as an actor, but now I admire the man. He is so very humble!

Shubhi : I have been a choreographer, been an anchor, hosted events and I thought that I am qualified enough to handle fame. But the truth is that right now fame is handling me. I think that with Chak De! India, we have all become a team and we are helping each other out even when we are out on tours. My dream would be to host a Filmfare award with SRK and then I will ask my parents to look for a boy and settle down and have children (Laughs).

Shimit Amin, whose first and so far only film “Ab Tak Chhappan” came a good three years ago, is flummoxed by rumours that his just released “Chak De India” had to be re-shot.

Starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, the film has opened to rave reviews.

Clearing the rumours, Amin told IANS: “Not a frame has been re-shot - any crew member can vouch for that. There was another rumour about the hard disc crashing. It didn’t happen. Even if it did there was nothing to panic about. Any computer-savvy guy knows hard discs are backed up and can easily be replaced.” For Amin, the leap from the gritty cops film “Ab Tak Chhappan” to the world of female hockey players in “Chak De India” is astounding.

“For me it’s just the script. I react to the script. It didn’t matter which genre. But yes, the thought of doing a hockey film was challenging because nobody had done it. It gave me a chance to explore an entirely untried genre,” said Amin.

“Jaideep Sahni’s script was something I wanted to put on screen. I’ve come from the US and this film gave me a chance to connect to one new part of Indian culture,” he added.

Though film has been received well at the box office, audiences responded somewhat warily to the theatrical trailer of “Chak De India” where all the hockey playing girls were brought on screen one after another.

“The trailer was an experiment, just as much as the film. We clearly wanted to introduce the 13 characters through the film. It was a broad canvas. Some people did like it. Others didn’t. It doesn’t have romance songs and the formula. My film is about characters who’ll hopefully involve the audience within five minutes of playing time.”

Casting for the roles of the female hockey players was a gruelling task.

“It was very difficult to cast. We had to find girls who could play hockey and speak lines that were quite complicated. We had to go to different parts of the country and find women who could play sports. We looked for girls who were firstly athletic, and then see if they could hold the hockey stick.”

In the course of making the film Amin discovered how poorly hockey is treated in the country.

“When I’d go out on Sunday mornings searching for female athletes, every single green patch that I passed had boys playing cricket. No hockey anywhere - forget female hockey players. I couldn’t even see one female cricketer anywhere. I’d be so envious. If I had to make a cricket movie my life would be so much easier. But we loved the script so much we wanted to be true to it as much as possible.”

Finally, after months of search, semi-athletic females were chosen.

“We had to choose semi-actors and train them to play hockey and to act. For three months we would wake up at 4.30 a.m. and they’d play hockey for five hours and then undergo physiotherapy.

“It was nerve-wracking. We didn’t know if it’d work. But all the actors, hockey players and actors-players helped one another. They all became one community. The cast never felt it was acting. Finally, they looked convincing as a team.”

Amin, who hired expert from the US to train and choreograph the team, says that the idea behind the film was to revive the sport.

Talking about Shah Rukh’s suitability for the game, he said: “Shah Rukh had played hockey and his passion for the game remained. As for Shah Rukh, you’d be surprised to know how similar in attitude he is to Nana Patekar who starred in my first film.

“They both understand the cinematic medium completely. Their knowledge of the medium is astounding. Look at the varied work Shah Rukh has done… from Mani Kaul to Aziz Mirza to Aditya Chopra.”

Amin and Shah Rukh’s association go back a long way.

“During ‘Asoka’ I worked in his company, doing promos. He knew what I am all about. As for his image, to date people consider Shah Rukh’s performance in ‘Swades’ among his best. And that was different. We never thought of his image or anything else.

“I was just interested the whole community of hockey, just as the whole relationship between cops and crime interested me in ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’.”

He’s all praise for his producers.

“Ram Gopal Varma was so supportive during ‘Ab Tak Chappan’. And now during ‘Chak De’, Mr. Yash and Aditya Chopra were completely supportive. ‘Chak De’ is far more complicated in terms of technical effects.”

Amin is happy that sports genre is gaining popularity among filmmakers.

“I’m glad films on sports are being made in Mumbai. There’s just three-four genres to explore. I’ve done what I wanted to do in ‘Chak De India’. What am I doing next? I wish I knew. But it has to be the story that interests me. But yes, I’ve a contract for three films with Yash Raj Films.”

Finally, has Amin become a hockey player?

“No no… I can’t play any sport.”

It’s rare in our industry to talk to or about scriptwriters but Jaideep Sahni (Jungle, Company, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Bunty Aur Babli) has changed all that. He is not only doing a whole lot of good for his breed, which is still rare in Bollywood, but he has also been the reason behind some terrific cinema in the recent past. Here’s an exclusive chat with Jaideep for PFC on how he ideated, scripted and executed Chak De India. Also, a very Happy Independence Day to everyone. Chak De…

The idea: A couple of years back, I had just finished doing Company. Between Company and Khosla Ka Ghosla… In fact Khosla Ka Ghosla we had done first but Bunty Aur Babli got released earlier (smiles)… Somewhere around that time I read this article about the Indian women’s hockey team doing well in some championship. It seemed like a thing to be proud of but the damn thing was some 5 or 10 cc. It just occurred to me that if the cricket guys had done it, it would be a whole damn page… Some times some thing just catches your attention and you keep seeing that everywhere. Then all through the writing and making of Khosla Ka Ghosla it came jumping out at me…

The research: As I started writing Bunty Aur Babli, I started researching women’s hockey. Then I realised that the research became bigger than the game of hockey… it became about all Indian sports which was not cricket. Okay, we are a developing country and we may not have that kind of resources for those sports… but despite what little we can give them, these sportspeople did damn well. I remember seeing a picture once of either Australian or Argentinean women’s hockey team and our players in that frame were looking one-third the physical size of their’s. I thought how do these girls do it, man (laughs)?

The facts: Most of these girls are from small places like Jharkand and North-East… very few were from convents… even the coaches and support staff don’t get any good resources because we don’t have that kind of allocation for those sports. But somehow these girls kept on rising… Some times they will be second, some times they will be third… even first also… I kept researching and I got more and more into it. Here I was writing Bunty Aur Babli and here this women’s hockey was not leaving me.

The backing: By the time I stopped research this was like a thick book I got with me. Then, I remember, we had finished the readings of the principal cast of Bunty Aur Babli and then we were going for the shoot. And Adi said: “Okay, one job done, so what do you feel like doing next?” I told him that there is this story yaar, which is not leaving me… By that time a kachcha story had formed in my head. Of how Indian women’s hockey team takes on the biggest countries in the world and goes on to become World Champions. I wanted to show the same story of the coaches also… They are not like our cricket coaches… They are not Greg Chappell – they are very modest and unassuming guys (laughs)… But if you see the telecast of the Commonwealth Championship or something, the way the commentators talk about them, you would think that we should all stand up when these guys come… But we hardly notice them. I told Adi all that… He just said: “Jaideep the story has to be told, the film has to be made. Just leave everything else and finish this as quickly as possible…” You are alone for three years and you are in your own space and you think that you are on to something great and then you finally tell someone else… He could have been bored also but I could see in Adi’s eyes that same interest and more importantly the respect for these people, the same that I had in me. So I was now sure that I was on to something… Then I started developing a screenplay at full speed… Somewhere in that space, Shimit also came in and I shared with him all my research. Shimit is that kind of director who just doesn’t go and make a film… he has to be touched by the subject. I knew him from before because we both worked with Ram Gopal Varma. I shared the research with him… By that time all the principal characters I had got… Shimit also got very excited…

The roadblocks: Then we started working on the film and we realized that we have gotten into more than we can chew (laughs)… We thought ek hockey ka film bana denge… But it became such a big thing. We ran into this whole casting this… Hockey is not like cricket where you just take a shot of someone bowling and then separately take a shot of someone hooking. They have to play… hockey is long shot… they have to play… And where do you get players who can act? And where do you get actors who can play? They have to play to some level… They have to play till university or state level to at least look good on screen because they had to defeat foreign teams in the script. And the same problem with the foreign teams also…

The solution: Our search for all these girls took us about seven-eight months and then we shortlisted a few girls after dhakka-khaoing all across India and acting trials and game trials… Then we realized that we have to train them. We thought jisko acting nahin aati acting sikhayenge and jisko hockey nahin aati hockey sikhayenge… But it turned out to be very difficult and we ended up doing this camp for half a year. They would get up at 4.30 in the morning and play till about lunch time… Then they will have lunch and their acting classes will start. It will go on till the evening and then their dialect classes will start. Because I had these girls from all over India and we had these different dialects. I was very keen that we do those dialects and we don’t make a filmi thing of it. After the dialect classes they would all be exhausted and there would always be injuries… So sauna and steam and physio… all will start. This went on for half a year and then we got guest lecturers from other sports, ex hockey players, ex soccer players… They were brought in to motivate the girls because in between they were very close to giving up. At least every two months somebody would want to give up or at least we would want to give up (laughs).

Fortunately the whole team did it. We had an assistants’ team who were women heavy and we were just able to do it yaar. Then Shah Rukh came and in Shah Rukh’s eyes also, I saw the same thing. He cares. He has been a player himself and a hockey player… He just said this film has to be made. And it’s been done now. Thankfully… (smiles)

SRK and the number game!

King Khan has made it to Emperor status in Bollywood this year. More than the moolah that films like KANK , Don and Chak De India have made, it’s how he has picked roles with variety and established himself as a versatile, powerful star that puts him in the news every other day.

But it’s no coincidence that this year has been so big for Shah Rukh Khan, according to numerologist Sanjay B Jumaani. SRK is is ruled by the romantic Moon (2) and the creative Netpune (7), which also rules some legendary names like Dilip Kumar (December 11), Rajesh Khanna (December 29) and Amitabh Bachchan (October 11). In numerology , his name adds up to a dream number, 42, Jumaani points out. “42 is 6, which denotes Venus, the planet of love, luxury and entertainment ,” he says.
Enduring entertainment brands like Warner Brothers, Universal Studios and Walt Disney also add up to 6. “Besides, Shah Rukh is also in his 42nd year. No wonder he started the year by signing a mega TV deal for a game show. Soon after, his wax statue was installed at Madame Tussauds - all adding to the hype.”

Jumaani also has an explanation for his excellent working relationships with some of Bollywood’s biggest production houses. “SRK is a Scorpion, ruled by 9 of Mars. Yash Chopra is also a 9, being born on the 27th, so they gave many hits together , starting with DDLJ (which itself added to 6, an immensely good number).

Karan Johar is also ruled by 7 and 2 (Neptune and Moon), SRK is ruled by 2 and 7. No wonder they look so happy together,” he says, tongue firmly in cheek. His association with Farah Khan (January 9) has resulted in the hit Main Hoon Na; Aziz Mirza (Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Chalte Chalte) is also 7, another of his lucky numbers. Don, too, added up to 7.

Some lookouts: “Shah Rukh should be careful about his diet,” says Jumaani, “He should be wary of wining, dining and womanising.” But other than that, King Khan will rock through 2007 and right into 2008 too, predicts Jumaani. “This year being his 43rd (4 + 3 = 7), he should continue to entertain us. Don to pakadna mushkil hi nahin, namumkin hai !”

Chak De’ Shah Rukh’s magic will last a long time

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS) After playing yuppie lover in several romantic films he got tagged as the best entertainer in the country. But Shah Rukh Khan has surprised everyone with his latest “Chak De! India” where his performance as a no-nonsense hockey coach establishes him as one of the finest actors in the Hindi film industry.

If writer Jaideep Sahni and director Shimit Amin are getting accolades for making such an unconventional film, Shah Rukh too is winning praise for his natural performance as Kabir Khan, the disgraced hockey player who tries to redeem his prestige by coaching the women’s hockey team and making them winners.

Those who thought “Swades” was SRK’s best performance, as an Indian American NASA scientist who comes home on a visit only to get involved in developmental projects in a village, will be surprised with his emoting in “Chak De! India”.

The actor, who had earned much flak for doing “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna”, shows his prowess and shuts up critics as “Chak De…” has so far not received any negative feed back.

While fans say they are proud of him for choosing an unusual film like this, critics across the globe are raving about how effortlessly he plays a coach who travels to glory from gloom.

“After ‘Swades’ Shah Rukh has again essayed a role where he has totally negated his own superstar self and completely become the character he is supposed to play. There is not a single trace of the superstar that we have seen in most of his films like ‘Don’,” said Anuradha, a Shah Rukh fan.

Critic Andy Webster in his review in New York Times writes: “For his part, Mr. Khan, to his credit, lets his co-stars’ youthful charisma carry the movie. He also laudably portrays a man who vigorously and unabashedly advocates the advancement of women.”

The film is based on former India goalkeeper Mir Ranjan Negi who lost his glory after conceding several goals in a match against Pakistan in the 1982 Asian Games final. He was dropped from the team. Negi returned to the hockey field, most grudgingly, 16 years later as a goalkeeping coach and helped India in winning the 1998 Asian Games men’s gold at Bangkok and the women’s gold at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002.

Shah Rukh convincingly portrays the shame, disillusionment of the disgraced hockey player and determination to win back his prestige.

Negi, who was roped in as a technical director of the film, said he was impressed by Shah Rukh’s performance.

“He is a fine actor and evoked the right emotions in the movie. He has done justice to the role,” Negi told IANS.

Aditya Chopra’s mega hit “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” gave the actor the yuppie romantic hero image, and others hits like “Dil To Paagal Hai”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Kal Ho Naa Ho” built on that persona.

Post the success of these films he became the superhero and directors began to concentrate on his image, mannerisms and style. As a result, Shah Rukh never got enough chance to prove his versatility as one who could ably play unpredictable roles.

However, film critic Anumpama Chopra’s recently released book “King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema” reveals that diverse roles give Shah Rukh creative satisfaction.

Which is quite true. The actor, who is often accused of playing safe and not working with untried directors, tried to be versatile in “Baazigar” and “Darr”. They were anti-hero roles and nobody would have dared to touch them, but he managed to twist negative roles in his favour.

He has tried to play unconventional roles - in “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani”, as a journalist, in “Asoka”, a historical, and “Devdas”, as an alcoholic lover. But the films, though appreciated, didn’t benefit him much.

But it was Ashotosh Gowariker’s “Swades” which was the turning point in his career, which critics described as his coming of age. His performance as NASA scientist Mohan Bhargava didn’t show a single trace of his iconic attitude. He immersed himself in his character and wowed both critics and fans.

And now the acceptance of his role in “Chak De! India” substantiates the fact that there is perhaps no one like Shah Rukh.

People can go on arguing whether Aamir Khan or Irrfan Khan or Amitabh Bachchan is a better actor than Shah Rukh, but the truth remains that the superstar is being accepted as the best and one shouldn’t underestimate his potential.

Such is the performance of Shah Rukh as Kabir Khan that it will live with the audience for a long time.

Shetty, the newly appointed brand ambassador for hockey feels Khan would’ve been a better choice

The mood of the nation is hockey and not cricket, courtesy Chak De! India. Even Sunil Shetty who is a cricket buff also agrees.

Here, Shetty who was recently appointed official brand ambassador for hockey in the country, talks all about the national sport and more:Tell us about your appointment as brand ambassador for hockey?
I learnt about it about two months back. I had okayed the papers. I have some friends in Bombay Customs who came to me and asked if I wanted to do something for hockey. They said that they had spoken to K P S Gill and he had mentioned that it would be great if I being a sportsman and an active athlete would be able to do it.

And you agreed immediately?
Yes, I am very proud to be associated with hockey which has brought us more national glory than cricket. Except for the World Cup in ’83 and a few heroes like Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly, can we talk about anything else in cricket?

So techinally you’d decided to support hockey before Chak De! became a rage?
Yes… but I say that the actual brand ambassador of hockey should be Shah Rukh Khan and nobody else. See Chak De! And you will know what I am talking.

You watched it?
Yes, I did. And I loved it. I messaged Shah Rukh after the film. When I saw it for the second time, I liked it even more. I think Chak De! is SRK’s best performance till date.

Did SRK reply back?
Yes. He always does. He and I are pretty close.

So you think if Lagaan could go to the Oscars, so should Chak De!?
Yes, I endorse that. What a patriotic film, and that without shouting any slogans! I think that the film is also a slap on the cricket selectors that they should start looking beyond their respective states.

What will your duties be as brand ambassador?
I will have to give time and I am willing to do that. It will require me to travel and be present at the major hockey matches which India plays, shoot a national feel song for them and talk about the game wherever possible. Also, I would invite some of my Bollywood colleagues to come over and be a part of it as and when they can.

Are you aware about the technicalities of hockey?
Look, I have not been appointed as the coach. My job is something else. Like today, my friend Akash Gupta of Air Hostess Academy has agreed to sponsor the forthcoming Glorious Cup between India and Pakistan which begins on September 11.

Is this brand ambassador post for a specific duration?
No. It will be as long as they are happy with me and I can do it,

Going back to Chak De! The girl who impressed you the most in Chak De!?
I think it’s very difficult to decide between Sagarika Ghatge (Preeti Sabharwal), Shilpa Shukla (Bindiya Naik), Tanya Abrol (Balbir Kaur) and Chitrashi Raut (Komal Chautala). And I wouldn’t like to take the credit away from any of the sixteen girls.

That doesn’t answer my question!
Since you insist, I think it’s a tie between Shilpa and Chitrashi.

With the disastrous showings of Marigold - An Adventure in India (25%) and Buddha Mar Gaya (20%), all eyes are now on the Akshay Kumar - Vidya Balan comedy Heyy Babyy, which opens this Friday. The film is hot in trade circles and is expected to have a good opening. The music for the film has done well, garnering a 64%, which is ‘Good’. Patna, Aug 23 (UNI) Inspired by the story line and patriotic spirit of the characters in ‘Chak De India’, Bihar government was mulling the idea of not charging entertainment tax for the film in the state.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who also holds the finance portfolio, said because of its marvellous quality and restraints shown by the characters in the film, it deserves to be freed from entertainment tax.

He said the government was planning to lift entertainment tax from ‘Chak De India’ so that more and more people especially the youths could enjoy it.

Mr Modi, who had enjoyed every scene of the picture had all praise for its director Shimit Ameen, said the director had shown his patriotism in this film.

Shah Rukh Khan, in the lead role as the inspirational coach, is the big plus in the film.

The idea for removing the tax from the picture emanated in his mind when he was watching it, said Mr Modi.

‘Chak De India’ has special links with the state of Bihar as one of the prominent character among the 11 players of the women’s Hockey team, Shilpa Shukla originally belongs to Hajipur in Vaishali district.

Shipla Shukla, who was educated in Delhi was earning name, fame a glory for her acting.

Mr Modi said the gritty pace and marvellous restraint made ‘Chak De India’ was an unbridled ode to patriotism.

Shah Rukh Khan film’s release sees spurt in sale of equipment Link

The Bollywood field of influence has momentarily shifted from hairstyle to hockey sticks, from sex appeal to sporting spirit. Chak De! India has achieved the impossible in leading sporting goods stores — hockey sticks have outsold cricket bats over the past two weeks.

Ever since Shah Rukh Khan and his girl gang hit the halls on August 10, demand for hockey equipment has gone up. And in keeping with the Chak De! effect, many first-time buyers have been girls.

“We have sold about 30 hockey sticks in 10 days. In the same period, only 20-odd cricket bats were sold,” smiled Harish Sachdev, director of Bodyline Sports, which has three outlets in the city. “On the day the film released, there were many kids who came to our store to pick up a hockey stick. In the past few days, we have had teenagers and older people buying the equipment.” Most hockey sticks sold were in the Rs 150-450 bracket.

GK Sports has recorded a 30 per cent rise in the sale of hockey sticks this fortnight. “The boost in sales can surely be attributed to the film. Some of the buyers seemed genuinely interested to pursue the sport,” said partner Adeep Kapoor.

But for those inspired by the heroics of SRK’s Team India, the reel romance may last only till it encounters ground reality. The first to point that out is Paritosh Sarkar, who has been trying to sell hockey sticks for 30 years in Maidan Market. “Some buyers did turn up after the film was released, but this can hardly become a trend in a state with no astroturf stadium. Let’s face it, hockey is dead here,” he shrugged.

Bengal Hockey Association secretary Gurbux Singh echoed the seller’s cynicism. “Interest sparked in the movie hall will fizzle out as soon as an enthusiast encounters the sorry state of Bengal hockey. I have been crying myself hoarse but neither the government nor any private company is ready to fund an astroturf field,” he rued.

Romance will run into a rude reality check as soon as these first-time enthusiasts step on to the field, warned young hockey veterans. “The movie is inspiring and it has created awareness about women’s hockey. But infrastructure here is so appalling that there is little hope for the game,” says Shakuntala Shaw, 16, a Behala girl playing for the past eight years.

A few more days to go, the excitement is in the air. The PR so far has been very well handled. Shimit Amin, Jaideep Sahni and SRK have been all over the media talking about the movie. By now everyone knows what the movie is about. It is clear that this is not your typical non Yash Ji and non Adi directed YRF movie. Had it been a typical YRF movie then there would have been, without fail, the not so big, Big B in a yet another awfull get up. Perhaps this time playing a street urchin recovering from cancer. Not just any cancer (how can it be, with Big B it has to be something bombastic), but bum cancer (similar to breast cancer, but mainly suffered by Bachchalan men). So imagine if you will, Big B in street urchins clothes, a tattered “kurta” (a oversized long shirt) and a hole ridden “lungi” (a kind of male sarong), with one butt cheek unusually swollen and convex and the other butt cheek eroded by cancer (and therefore concave), singing “Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan”. Imagine him doing those delicate hip movements that he did in JBJ but this time imagine him doing that in a hole ridden “lungi” with one convex butt cheek and one concave butt cheek. Big B fans would have watched that with tears in the eyes, sobbing loudly and pulling their hair out every time Big B burst out into “Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan”. Meanwhile normal people like you and me would have laughed, as usual, at Big B.

Well guys, sorry, you won’t be seeing Big B with mismatched butt cheek in “Chak De India”. This is not your typical YRF movie. But before you read any further please go and download that song, “Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan”. It is a masterpiece. From all the songs in the “Chak De India” CD, I like this song the most. Although “Kuch Kariye and “Ek Hockey” are almost as good.

If you have seen and liked Shimit Amin’s earlier work, then you are for a treat. ATC compared to CDI seems like a graduating movie of a film student. CDI is slick, uplifting, positive and very gripping. You will not even notice that SRK is not singing songs and not romancing any heroine. It is without doubt the best Bollywood made sports movie you have ever seen. It is also by far the most Hollywood like narration but with a pure Desi soul.

But to say that CDI is just a sport movie would be very misleading. CDI is also a story of a bunch of girls, their dreams, their aspirations, and their struggles. The emotions are so real that you will get sucked into it. The coming together of these girls under the coaching of SRK is very well handled. These girls act like seasoned actresses.

Above all, CDI is about SRK and his fight to regain his honor You will see SRK at his best, he is all SRK with a hint of the great Vince Lombardy (“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”) and a garnish of Manoj Kumar (“Mere Desh Ki Dharti”). CDI is proof positive why SRK is the Ronaldinho of acting, the Don Jungli Billa Khan of Bollywood. SRK was born to play Kabir Khan.

After ‘don’ning many avatars, Shah Rukh Khan will be seen as a hockey coach in the upcoming film, Chak De! India. And not just any coach, but that of a team of a gaggle of girls!

Girish Rao tracked down the actor for a lowdown on the film and why he’s scared of it.

Chake De India doesn’t look like a typical Shah Rukh Khan film — no songs, dance or romance…

(Smiles) Yes, it’s a non-Shah Rukh khan film with 16 actresses and no love angle. But sports, as a genre in films, is also not popular.

The concept for Yash Raj is a new thing. Director Shimit Amin’s last film was Ab Tak 56, which is nowhere near to what Yash Raj or I did. It’s a mix of unusual things.

There were so many reasons not to do the film but I think there were the same number of reasons for doing it.

So, do you think you are in a position where you can experiment?

My wife tells me I should keep experimenting. She thinks if I fail it wouldn’t affect my status or me.

But inside I am scared… I am scared of Chak De. Over the years, my audience has seen me doing the usual song and dance stuff. Suddenly, I am doing a film where I am surrounded by 16 girls and I don’t even have a single song. I can’t do this kind of film as I am not big actor.

Do you really mean that?

Ya, I mean I am a big star but not a big actor to keep experimenting. As you said earlier, it’s a non-SRK film. I’m aware of that and it scares me. As a student, I have prepared for the exam but some last moment jitters are still there

After so many years, you gave taken hockey stick in your hand. What was the experience this time around?

It was very difficult and different… I couldn’t play. As they say, you need to keep practicing if you want to play any sport well.

I was terribly bad at hockey though I was good at penalty corners and strokes, when I played for the film. It’s a tiring game. I thought playing against girls will be easy but let me tell you, they were fast and more efficient than me.

I tore my hamstring three days before shooting got over and I felt bad because I couldn’t play the game I was best at.

Is it true you did this film because of the director?

Shimit is a good friend and yes, I did this film just for him and not because it is Aditya Chopra’s or Yash Raj’s films.

When Adi first came to me with the idea, I refused it because he wanted to start it in three months, and at that time I was shooting for Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Don. I told him I could do this film only after a year. He wasn’t ready to wait and I was not in a position to accept the film.

But it took them some six to seven months to find the girls and once again, Adi came to me. This time, I had time so I accepted it.

The team of girls is young and many of them must be fans of yours?

They were too young. Some of them might be fans of John Abraham. The rawness, newness and nervousness of these girls taught me a lot.

They called me ‘Sir’ on the sets and chatted with me about acting and sometimes, hockey. I was like a semi coach in real life for acting too.

You seem to be on a friend-making spree in the film industry. Do you think rivalry within Bollywood is a thing of the past?

Competition is there but now it is completely positive and healthy. Before, stars used to think and say Uski film nahi chalni chahiye, taki meri film accha kare. But now, it’s like, Uski acchi chale toh meri aur bhi acchi chale.

It’s not that we are Langotiya yaars but we do share our notes with each other. If I get off early, I call Salman and we meet at my place or his.

Hrithik told me the story of Krrish 2 and he knows the subject of my Om Shanti Om. We do talk about directors and recommend cinematographers or even scripts to each other.

Where there is creativity there is bound to be competition. Aamir calls me up after watching my film (mimics Aamir) and says, ‘Shah Rukh, I want to talk to you. You shouldn’t have done this film.’ I think it’s much more matured nowadays.

What’s your take on the alleged cold war with Amitabh Bachchan?

Abhishek was with me till 4 am last night. We don’t have anything between us. But the media is not ready to buy that story. Personally, this kind of stuff has helped me a lot. In jagdon ki wajah se mein kai logon ke karib ho gaya hun. Kahin woh is khabar ko sahi na maan le isi liye mein unse close hota gaya.

Finally, a lot of them are my good friends.

What is happening at the home production front?

Om Shanti Om is releasing during Diwali. After that, we will produce two or three films every year. Right now, my company is in the hand-to-mouth state. We need to earn more.

There were reports about me preparing to buy a studio in Mumbai. That’s untrue. I just got a 8,000-9,000 square feet place on lease at Andheri. Real estate prices in Mumbai are sky high and it’s not possible for me to buy such a big office.

We have 60-70 visual experts and we need to increase this number to 150. We have done special effects for films like Main Hoon Na, Don, Honymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Om Shanti Om.

What next?

I’m on vacation for four months. After that, I will start Raju Hirani’s film followed by Shankar’s. I’m also doing one film with Karan Johar and another one for Yash Raj.

How I was picked: I got third time lucky after missing out on the film’s hockey and acting auditions. So it was five months from my first audition in February to my making it to the team last June. I was one of the few with zero hockey experience. I had done English theatre in Bangalore for five years, a Malayalam film, By the People, apart from a brief role in Phir Milenge.
The best and the worst: Getting into the mental discipline of a sportsperson was quite difficult as I’ve never had even a remote connection with any sport.
SRK moment: Every moment initially. We were so thrilled that he was around though later of course we got used to it.
Next move: My next release is going to be the Nagesh Kukunoor directed Aashaye opposite John Abraham.Chak de means: It’s a term of celebration.

The best and the worst: The worst was definitely the alarm going off at 3.30 am and the run for the practise sessions. ‘‘But once there, we had a rocking time. We forgot all about our injuries, bruised ankles, back aches, and just got down to the game.’’
SRK moment: The Main Hoon Naa hug he gives everyone on the sets and all of us playing soccer with him.
Next move: Studies—she’s in third year college—but who knows it could be films after that!

How I was picked: Being an MTV roadie finalist, I was asked if I would like to go for the film’s hockey auditions. Next happened my acting audition and that worked fine too as I had done theatre in Bangalore.
The best and the worst: The best thing was that I got to learn hockey. The worst was that I got injured a lot.
SRK moment: On the first day of the shoot, I was sitting in a corner of the cloakroom on a small stool. Shah Rukh walked up and asked if he could share it with me. We sat there chatting for nearly 20 minutes and then I asked him a really silly question, ‘Do you enjoy acting?’ He replied, ‘‘I guess after 16 years I am supposed to enjoy it,’’ before adding, ‘‘Choti choti stulon par aisi badi badi batein hoti hain…’’
Next move: A couple of scripts have come my way.

How I was picked: I’ve always wanted to be an actress but my parents insisted I complete my graduation. So the day my BCom final exams were over, I went for the audition with a few of my regular photographs. I didn’t even have a portfolio. But I was selected on the day of my audition itself. I was the last one to join the team.
The best and the worst:Getting to know so many people and keeping pace with Shah Rukh sir was the high point. Getting up at 4.30 am for training was the tough bit.
SRK moment: My entry scene where I was supposed to show attitude, but I was so nervous of Shah Rukh that I could hardly do it convincingly. But he gave me some tips.
Next move: I’ve got film offers.
Chak de means: Play your heart out and make India proud.

How I was picked: Having played school level hockey I went for the film’s Bangalore auditions just for the heck of it. My Hindi wasn’t too good, so I didn’t think I would be selected. However, one of the film’s assistant directors who saw my hockey audition liked my performance and I was called for the role after a month.
The best and the worst: We trained for two months and then all through the film’s shoot. The best thing about training was meeting so many wonderful people.
SRK moment: When I saw him with the stubble I told him, ‘Please don’t shave off the beard, you look so hot in it!’ And he bragged about it to every one.
Next move: I definitely see a career for myself in south Indian cinema.
Chak de means: Fun! Let go! The most awesome experience ever!

How I was picked: I am an NSD graduate and have acted in many films including Water. The casting director had seen my work and I guess they thought I fitted in. My mother tongue Bhojpuri helped my essaying the character of the Jharkhandi girl Rani better.
The best and the worst: The training was great but I hated waking up at 3.30 am in the morning.
SRK moment: The way he used to recharge us with his infectious spirit especially when we were all tired. I liked the way he would exhort us for another run with his signature shout of ‘Bhago India bhago!’
Next move: I am currently directing a play on war widows called The Silent Front in Bangalore. I have some interesting character roles in Hindi films as well.
Chak de means: An experience that has changed my whole life.

How I was picked: The casting director had seen me on my travel show. So, there I was playing the goalie and the captain—even though I had no association with hockey.
The best and the worst: The training taught us the spirit of the game, so much so that when I held the Cup as captain, I cried spontaneously. The toughest part was getting into the pads initially and getting the moves right. But being a Kathak dancer helped.
SRK moment: My first scene with him that had only him, me and a hockey stick and I hit his leg with my first move. But he just said chill and taught me how to wield it right.
Next move: I am doing Sanjay Gadhvi’s Kidnap and Junction starring Abhay Deol.
Chak de means: Just go for what you believe in!

How I was picked: The director and the casting agent came to my college, St Andrew’s, during Sunday practice and watched me play. Later they asked me if I was interested in being a part of the film. I said yes because it is about a sport that is close to my heart.
The best and the worst: The fitness was the best thing. The worst was that sometimes you over-did your exercises.
SRK moment: In Australia, we used to play football after the shoot. SRK is a good footballer.
Next move: A graduate in History from Khalsa College and a state hockey player, Miranda has shifted focus to football. Is currently a senior level footballer representing Maharashtra.

How I was picked: A friend had gone for an audition and recommended my name. The casting agent then came down during a tournament at St Andrew’s College where I study and saw me play. They offered me a role but then decided against it because I was only 16. But they changed their mind.
The best and the worst: I practice regularly so there is nothing particularly good or bad about it.
SRK moment: In a scene, which was later edited out, my character was to replace Gunjan. The scene was not shot in sync-sound so SRK came up to me and said, ‘‘I can’t think of anything to say, so I will quietly mouth ABCD, make sure you don’t laugh.’’
Next move: I’m clueless. I guess sports, hockey.

How I was picked: I have played hockey and represented Mumbai. I read an article in the newspaper and got interested. So my mother who works with Radio City got in touch with some friends who put me through Yashraj Studios.
The best and the worst: Nothing apart from the fact that it was really grilling and that too is both a good thing and a bad thing.
SRK moment: He took us clubbing in Melbourne and later we all partied the night away at our apartment.
Next move: I just want to concentrate on my job now. I work with Spice Jet in the ground support control department.
Chak de means: All the 16 girls in the team.

Nisha Nair, 20
Mumbai

On field: Soi Moi
Position: Defence

How I was picked: I am a state level player. The casting agent came to BHA (Bombay Hockey Association) and I was asked to audition and later they let me know that I’d been chosen for the part.
The best and the worst: There is nothing better than playing hockey or football in the rain. There was no bad part.
SRK moment: Meeting him for the first time on the field at BHA and later playing football after a shoot in Melbourne.
Next move: Studies and sports.
Chak de means: Hockey.

Lalhming Kimi, 20
Mizoram

On field: Mary
Position: Defender
How I was picked: A goalkeeper in her state team, her game and a great voice got her the role.
The best and the worst: Hockey came easy to her.
Next Move: Kimi is all set to graduate from player to coach—she’s pursuing a diploma in hockey coaching from Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala.

Sandia Furtado, 20
Mumbai

On Field: Nethra Reddy
Position: Left Out
Jersey No. 11
How I was picked: I had dropped in at the Yashraj office to meet my mum who was auditioning some of the actors for the movie. That’s when the casting director saw me and suggested I get on board.
The best and the worst: The best thing about the training was doing the stunts.
SRK moment: There’s a scene where I am being bullied by Bindiya and Shah Rukh just comes along and puts his arm around me. A lot of people really envied me.
Next move: I am a third year student of sociology and anthropology and first want to be done with college. I am open to doing ads but films are a strict no till I finish college.
Chak de means: Being one.

Chonchon Zimik, 24
Manipur

On field: Molly
Position: Left Half (back)

How I was picked: A fashion design student from IITC, Pune, Zimik’s friend recommended her to a casting agent from Yashraj Films. ‘‘I was called for an audition. It was a hilarious experience because I was asked to say some fighting dialogues in Hindi. I don’t speak Hindi well so the entire effect was rather comic. But I guess it worked.
The best and the worst: I trained for three months and I am happy that I can now play our national sport. Waking up at 4:30 am everyday for three months was the tough bit!
SRK moment: I’m clumsy and I was always getting into a spot. Shah Rukh always laughed at that and I can never forget that smile and that twinkle in his eye when he would look at me.
Next move: Post film, I was slightly confused. But I’ll be realistic, I am not exactly what Bollywood is looking for. I work in Mumbai in a fashion designing workshop and will stick to fashion designing. But if there is a good role in a film that deals with the North-East or my state, then I am game for it.
Chak de means: Victory!

How I was picked: I had gone to Jabalpur as a member of the Uttaranchal hockey team to play in the national women’s tournament when I was asked to come for the audition. The film’s director saw me play the left striker in a couple of matches after which I was selected.
The best and the worst: Though I am a professional player I got to learn a lot on the techniques used in international hockey. On the personal front, since I was the youngest team member, everyone pampered me silly. However, the worst thing was getting up every day at 4am for practice that would continue till 2 pm.
SRK moment: There is a scene where Shah Rukh hugs and lifts me. We did so many retakes of the scene that by the time it was finally canned I had begun to smell like him.
Next move: I intend completing my graduation in Mass Media and I will be playing hockey for my college from September. As for acting, the offer has to be really exciting. For now, she’s content doing her Haryanvi Komal Chautala act for friends.
Chak de means: An emotional mantra for motivation.

Shilpa Shukla, 26
Hazipur

Position: Centre Half

How I was picked: Having worked in theatre for six years I was fine about the acting bit, the hockey part was a bit dicey. Casting director Abhimanyu and director Shimit Amin had seen my performance in Khamosh Paani and were keen on casting me. I too was keen on playing the ‘bad girl’. So I landed up at the audition, the only girl with a hockey stick, two days after my husband gifted me one on Valentine’s Day.
The best and the worst: I had never imagined I would ever go through six hours of daily practice. The high point was being coached by Mir Ranjan Negi (former Indian player and coach).
SRK moment: It’s the Zipper scene when I come on to Shah Rukh. Though I was never daunted by his star status, after doing the scene I was literally shivering for two or three minutes. I wrote my experience of doing that scene on a card and gave it to him. He read it and gave me an assuring hug.
Next move: I have signed a film, Junction, opposite Abhay Deol
Chak de means: Urja, energy, enthusiasm and power.

After winning accolades for KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, Jaideep Sahni is back with CHAK DE INDIA.

An acclaimed story writer, Jaideep Sahni has done only a few films in last 7-8 years that he has spent in the industry. Nevertheless, in this short time period he has earned quite a name for himself and got recognized by the bigwigs of the industry, most notably being Yash Raj Films.

Starting his career with films like JUNGLE and COMPANY for Ram Gopal Verma, he soon found himself in the Yash Raj Films camp with superhit BUNTY AUR BABLI to his name. As a story, screenplay and dialogues writer for the film, he got an extremely positive response from the industry. Last year came KHOSLA KA GHOSLA and it was celebration time yet again for Sahni.

One looks forward to CHAK DE INDIA now which is expected to take Sahni’s graph only higher up. As a screenplay writer for the film that has an original subject to boost, one expects nothing but the best from Sahni here.

Tiff with director Shimit Amin ended in the film getting new promos

Looks like the shoot of Yash Raj’s Chak De! India was a battleground for more than just a hockey match. Sources close to the project reveal that all is not well between Shah Rukh Khan and director Shimit Amin.

It is learnt that the two have been at loggerheads right from day one of making the movie. However things really blew out of proportion when Shimit approved the early teasers of Chak De that was released along with Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

A source reports, “Shah Rukh wasn’t too thrilled with those promos. He was extremely involved in the entire making of the movie and didn’t feel the teasers did justice to the product.”
